Rema 1000 achieved significant energy savings with smart snow-melting control in Northern Norway

Over the past six months, Envo has collaborated with REMA 1000 in Northern Norway to reduce the energy consumption associated with snow-melting systems. The goal was to optimize the operating time of heating cables based on actual weather conditions and the stores’ real needs, without compromising essential operations.

In the project, Envo implemented smart snow-melting controls in selected stores with heating cables that had previously been regulated only by a simple temperature-based lockout. These systems lacked local snow-melting automation, which often resulted in unnecessarily long operating times and higher energy consumption. With more demand-based control, the heating cables were regulated according to actual conditions such as temperature, weather developments, and operating conditions. The software controls the snow-melting system automatically, allowing the user to easily select the desired operating mode (Auto, On, or Off). It issues alerts and blocks operation outside the season, when the outdoor temperature is too high, or when operation continues unintentionally for too long, so that faults or unnecessary energy use can be detected quickly. The result was more precise and continuously optimized

Documented effect

The project’s findings show that smart snow-melting control delivers both significant energy savings and lower operating costs.

• Up to 65% reduced operating time for heating cables

• Savings of 6,000–7,000 kWh per month per store

• Half of the stores achieved savings of over 80% during the period.

• Significantly lower energy costs without compromising functionality or operations

• Less unnecessary strain and reduced wear on the heating cables

The value of Rema 1000 in Northern Norway

This has created value on several levels:

• Direct and measurable savings on energy costs

• Significant savings provide a short payback period on the investment

• Greater insight, control, and predictability in the operation of snow-melting systems

• Reduced energy consumption supports more sustainable and resource-efficient operations

The results from this case have been better than expected, and we have achieved significant energy savings.
